01 — Why it matters
Gum disease is silent — until it isn't.

Gum disease (periodontal disease) doesn't always hurt, so it's easy to miss without regular check-ups. Over time, untreated gum disease can lead to receding gums, loose teeth and infection.

The good news: with regular dental hygiene visits, good brushing and flossing, gum disease can usually be stopped early — and even reversed in its earliest stage.

02 — Symptoms

Signs you shouldn't ignore.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01Red, swollen or tender gums
  2. 02Bleeding when you floss or brush
  3. 03Loose teeth or gaps opening up
  4. 04Persistent bad breath
  5. 05Gums pulling away from the teeth
  6. 06A change in how your teeth meet when you bite
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Bacterial plaque
The main driver of gum inflammation.
Smoking
Slows healing and masks early bleeding.
Diabetes
Less controlled blood sugar = worse gums.
Hormonal changes
Pregnancy and menopause can flare gums.
Medication
Some drugs reduce saliva or thicken gums.
Genetics & stress
Both raise your risk of gum problems.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Your gums bleed when you brush or floss.
  • Your gums look red, swollen or have pulled back.
  • You have persistent bad breath or a bad taste.
  • A tooth feels loose or your bite has changed.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

If your gums are painful or you have facial swelling, call us — we'll book you in for an urgent appointment and treat the infection straight away.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We'll measure your gums, take any necessary X-rays and put together a clear plan — hygiene visits, deeper periodontal cleaning and home-care coaching — to bring your gums back to health and keep them there.
