01 — Why it matters
Two kinds of staining — both fixable.

Most discolouration falls into two camps: external staining from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco — and internal staining from things like fluorosis, ageing or trauma.

Understanding which is which is the key to choosing the right treatment — a hygiene visit, professional whitening, or cosmetic work like bonding or veneers.

02 — Symptoms

Signs of staining.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01A general yellow or grey shade across all teeth
  2. 02Brown or yellow spots in specific areas
  3. 03A single tooth darker than the others
  4. 04Visible plaque or tartar near the gum line
  5. 05Loss of natural brightness compared to old photos
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Coffee, tea & red wine
Daily staining of enamel.
Tobacco
Heavy brown and yellow stains.
Sugar & plaque
Plaque hardens into discoloured tartar.
Fluorosis
Excess fluoride during tooth development.
Age
Enamel thins, dentine shows through.
Trauma or old fillings
A single darker tooth.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Your teeth look noticeably darker than they used to.
  • Over-the-counter whitening hasn't worked.
  • You have one tooth that's darker than the rest.
  • You'd like a smile assessment before whitening.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

Yellow teeth rarely cause pain — but if you have sensitivity at the same time, let us know when you call so we can plan a comfortable treatment.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We'll examine your teeth, recommend a professional clean to remove surface staining, and where suitable plan custom-made take-home whitening or in-clinic whitening for a brighter, more even smile.
