01 — Why it matters
Most chips can be fixed in a single visit.

Your dentist may be able to repair the tooth with a simple filling, but more complicated damage may need bonding, a veneer or a crown — we'll know the best option once we've examined the tooth.

If you don't take care of a broken or chipped tooth quickly, the problem can worsen and affect both your oral and general health. We recommend calling us as soon as possible so we can see a broken or chipped tooth the same day.

02 — Symptoms

You'll usually know straight away.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01Pain, particularly when chewing or biting
  2. 02Increased sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet
  3. 03Swelling of the gums around the affected tooth
  4. 04Bleeding when you eat, drink or touch the tooth
  5. 05A visible sharp edge or missing piece
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Hard food or ice
Biting or chewing on something particularly hard.
Accident or sports injury
Knocks, falls and contact sports.
Teeth grinding
Long-term grinding weakens enamel.
Old dental work
Decay or wear around fillings and crowns.
Age and wear
Enamel naturally thins over time.
Untreated decay
A weakened tooth fractures more easily.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Pain is sharp or constant, or lasts more than a day.
  • The tooth is loose or sensitive to pressure.
  • There's bleeding or swelling that won't settle.
  • A piece of tooth has come away — bring it with you if you can.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

Call us if you're in pain and need immediate care for a broken or chipped tooth — we'll fit you in for an emergency appointment. In the meantime, rinse with warm salty water and use a cold compress on the cheek to manage swelling.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

Once the tooth is stable we'll talk you through the long-term fix — a simple filling, bonding, a veneer or a crown — with clear pricing before anything starts.
