Dry Mouth Treatment

Mouth feeling dry, sticky or rough no matter how much you drink? Persistent dry mouth (xerostomia) is treatable — and important to address, because saliva protects your teeth and gums.

01 — Why it matters
Without saliva, the mouth can't defend itself.

Saliva washes away food, neutralises acid and helps prevent decay. When salivary flow drops, you'll notice a sticky feeling, bad breath and a higher risk of cavities and gum issues.

Our team can identify what's causing your dry mouth — from medication to mouth-breathing — and recommend the right products and treatments to settle it.

02 — Symptoms

Easy to spot once you know what to look for.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01Dry or sticky mouth and throat
  2. 02Trouble chewing, swallowing or speaking
  3. 03A slight burning feeling
  4. 04A rough tongue
  5. 05Cracked lips
  6. 06Bad breath
  7. 07Mouth ulcers
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Medication
Many common prescriptions reduce saliva.
Dehydration
Not enough water through the day.
Mouth breathing
Especially overnight.
Salivary gland issues
Less saliva produced naturally.
Age & hormones
Common in older adults and menopause.
Caffeine & alcohol
Both dehydrate the mouth.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Dryness has lasted more than a few weeks.
  • You're getting more cavities than usual.
  • You have persistent bad breath or mouth ulcers.
  • You're finding it hard to eat, sleep or speak comfortably.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

If your dry mouth comes with pain, ulcers or swelling, call us — we'll book you in promptly so we can check for infection and ease the symptoms.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We'll review your medications and lifestyle, recommend the right rinses, sprays and toothpastes for dry mouth, and make sure decay and gum problems are caught early through regular check-ups.
