01 — Why it matters
Small, but they can disrupt everything.

Mouth ulcers usually appear as small sores on the gums, tongue, inside of the lips or roof of the mouth. Most clear up within a week on their own, but some are very painful — especially when eating, drinking and talking.

If an ulcer lasts longer than two weeks, keeps coming back or feels different to your usual ones, it's worth getting it checked at our Ealing clinic.

02 — Symptoms

What to look for.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01Small, sometimes painful sores anywhere in the mouth
  2. 02Irritation from salty, sour or spicy food
  3. 03Tenderness when eating, drinking or brushing
  4. 04Ulcers that come back regularly
  5. 05Ulcers that don't heal within two weeks
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Accidental bite
Catching your cheek or lip.
Hot food or drink
Burning the inside of the mouth.
Stress & fatigue
Lowered immune response.
Brushing too hard
Trauma from a stiff brush.
Certain medications
Some drugs trigger ulcers.
Poor oral hygiene
Allows minor wounds to inflame.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • More than the usual amount of pain in or around the ulcer.
  • Pain that lasts longer than two consecutive days.
  • Ulcers appearing frequently, especially with no obvious cause.
  • An ulcer that hasn't healed in two weeks.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

If an ulcer is making it hard to eat or sleep, call us — we can prescribe stronger topical treatments and rule out other causes.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We'll examine the area, talk through your medical and lifestyle history, and recommend a plan — from gentle hygiene adjustments to prescription treatments — so the ulcers stop coming back.
