01 — Why it matters
Caught early, oral cancer is highly treatable.

Oral cancer can sound frightening, but understanding the risk factors and recognising symptoms early gives the best chance of successful treatment.

Our Ealing dentists check your tongue, cheeks, gums and the floor and roof of your mouth at every routine visit — exactly the kind of regular eye that spots changes early.

02 — Symptoms

Signs not to ignore.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01Mouth ulcers that don't heal within two to three weeks
  2. 02Persistent or recurring mouth pain
  3. 03Difficulty or pain chewing or swallowing
  4. 04Numbness or unexplained bleeding inside the mouth
  5. 05A persistent lump, white or red patch
  6. 06A hoarse voice or change in speech lasting weeks
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Tobacco
Smoking and chewing tobacco.
Alcohol
Heavy or long-term alcohol use.
HPV
Human papilloma virus.
Sun exposure
Especially to the lips.
Poor oral hygiene
Long-term inflammation.
Family history
A genetic factor for some patients.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Any sore, ulcer or patch that hasn't healed in 2–3 weeks.
  • Lumps or hard spots in the mouth, neck or jaw.
  • Persistent numbness, pain or difficulty swallowing.
  • Changes you've noticed but can't explain.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

If you have a symptom that's worrying you, call us — we'll book you in promptly for a careful soft-tissue exam and refer onward straight away if needed.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We recommend a screening as part of every six-monthly check-up. Higher-risk patients may benefit from more frequent visits — we'll discuss what's right for you at your first appointment.
