01 — Why it matters
Painful because the gum has no room.

Wisdom teeth get their name because they appear at the back of the mouth in late teens or twenties. Most of the time the jaw doesn't have enough space, so they erupt at an angle or only partially.

When wisdom teeth become impacted or stuck under the gum they can cause pain, swelling and infection. The good news: not every wisdom tooth needs to come out, and our wisdom teeth team will only recommend removal when it's the right call.

02 — Symptoms

Common signs of emerging wisdom teeth.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01Pain and tenderness in the gums and jaw
  2. 02Headaches or earaches on the affected side
  3. 03Swelling or redness behind the back molars
  4. 04Bleeding gums when brushing
  5. 05Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
  6. 06Discomfort when eating or swallowing
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Impaction
Not enough room to erupt fully.
Decay
Hard to clean back teeth are prone to cavities.
Infection
Food and bacteria trap under the gum flap.
Cysts
Rare fluid pockets around the tooth root.
Pressure
Damage to neighbouring molars.
Crowding
Shifting of other teeth.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Pain lasts longer than a day or two.
  • Your pain is severe or becoming unbearable.
  • You have a fever, earache, or pain when opening your mouth wide.
  • You notice swelling, pus or a bad taste.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

If you're in pain right now, call us and we'll book you in for an emergency appointment. Until then, rinse with warm salty water, take usual pain relief and avoid chewing on the affected side.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We'll examine the area, take an X-ray if needed and talk you through the options — from monitoring and hygiene support to gentle oral surgery and wisdom-tooth removal at our Ealing clinic.
