01 — Why it matters
Most jaw pain comes from the TMJ.

Jaw pain can make eating, talking and opening your mouth uncomfortable. Left untreated it gets harder to settle, so we recommend coming in early.

Most cases are caused by issues with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), grinding or a misaligned bite — all of which we treat at our Ealing practice.

02 — Symptoms

Obvious. And often painful.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01Painful or tender jaw
  2. 02Pain in and around your ear
  3. 03Pain in the temporomandibular joint
  4. 04Difficulty or pain when chewing
  5. 05Difficulty opening or closing your mouth
  6. 06Clicking or locking when you yawn
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

TMJ disorder
The most common cause of jaw pain.
Trauma or injury
Knocks to the face or jaw.
Bite issues
Poor jaw or tooth alignment.
Grinding & clenching
Daytime or night-time bruxism.
Arthritis
Affecting the jaw joint.
Stress
Tightened facial and jaw muscles.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Pain lasts longer than a day or two.
  • Pain is severe or your jaw locks.
  • You have earache or pain when opening wide.
  • You're avoiding certain foods because of pain.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

If you're in real pain right now, call us — we'll book you in for an urgent appointment and start with simple measures (soft diet, warm compresses, gentle exercises) while we plan longer-term treatment.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We'll examine your bite and jaw, take any X-rays needed and recommend the right combination of a custom-made splint, TMJ therapy and bite adjustment for you.
