Snoring (Sleep Apnoea)

Snoring & Sleep Apnoea

Snoring isn't just disruptive — it can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), where breathing briefly stops during sleep. Our team fit comfortable dental appliances that keep your airway open.

01 — Why it matters
OSA quietly steals deep sleep.

During sleep your throat muscles relax. In OSA the airway closes, oxygen drops and you wake briefly — over and over, often without realising.

Untreated, this leads to fatigue, irritability, headaches and longer-term health risks. Our team work with you to identify the cause and provide a comfortable, portable alternative to CPAP for many patients.

02 — Symptoms

What to look out for.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01Loud snoring
  2. 02Heavy breathing or gasping during sleep
  3. 03Insomnia or restless sleep
  4. 04Morning headaches
  5. 05Dry mouth on waking
  6. 06Daytime fatigue and difficulty concentrating
  7. 07Irritability or low mood
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Muscle relaxation
Throat muscles collapse the airway.
Physical obstruction
Tongue position or enlarged tonsils.
Brain signalling
Central sleep apnoea is rarer.
Weight
Extra tissue around the neck.
Smoking & alcohol
Both worsen night-time airway collapse.
Sleeping position
Back-sleeping often makes it worse.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Your partner has noticed you stop breathing in your sleep.
  • You wake unrefreshed despite a full night in bed.
  • You fall asleep easily during the day.
  • You snore loudly enough to disturb others.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

Snoring isn't usually painful, but if you have jaw pain or grinding alongside it, mention this when you call — they often go together and we'll plan for both.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

We'll assess your bite and airway, and where suitable fit a custom mandibular advancement device — far smaller and more comfortable than CPAP — to keep your airway open at night.
