01 — Why it matters
Bruxism quietly wears teeth down.

Many people grind or clench (called bruxism) without realising — at work when concentrating, or in their sleep. Mild grinding may not need treatment, but heavy or long-term grinding can crack teeth, flatten enamel and lock the jaw.

We'll examine your teeth and jaw, work out what's driving the grinding and protect what you have left with a custom-made night guard or splint.

02 — Symptoms

Often spotted by a partner or your dentist.

The signs vary, but most people notice one or more of these:

  1. 01Clenching or grinding your teeth (awake or asleep)
  2. 02Fractured, cracked or chipped teeth
  3. 03Flattened or visibly worn teeth
  4. 04Tooth pain or increased sensitivity
  5. 05Tired or tight jaw muscles, or a locked jaw
  6. 06Pain or soreness in jaw, neck, face or ears
  7. 07Headaches, especially in the morning
  8. 08Damage from chewing the inside of your cheek
  9. 09Disrupted sleep
03 — Causes

Where it comes from.

The most common culprits:

Stress & anxiety
The single biggest trigger for grinding.
Age
Common in young children — usually outgrown.
Personality
Competitive or hyperactive temperaments.
Medication
Some antidepressants increase grinding.
Family history
Bruxism often runs in families.
Sleep disorders
Linked closely to sleep apnoea.
04 — When to see a dentist

Don't wait it out.

Speak to your our practice dentist if you're experiencing any of the following — book an appointment as soon as you can:

  • Pain lasts longer than a day or two.
  • Your pain is severe or becoming unbearable.
  • You have an earache or pain opening your mouth wide.
  • You have chipped, cracked, loose or worn teeth.
  • You're worried about clenching or grinding overall.
05 — What to do about the pain

In discomfort right now?

If you're in pain right now, call us and we'll book you in. In the meantime, soft food, gentle jaw stretches and warm compresses on the cheek can settle the muscle ache.

06 — What's next

A plan, not a quick fix.

Most patients leave with a custom-fitted, comfortable night guard and a simple plan — including bite assessment, occlusal therapy and TMJ care — to stop the damage and ease the symptoms.
